Deep Relaxation

Deep relaxation: the ideal way to personality development

Development of the method

The desire for inner equanimity and personal satisfaction is as old as the human race. But the more our standard of living increases, and the more technology advances, the more difficult it becomes for us to get away from it all and relax. In short, to be satisfied with ourselves and the world around us. This results in disequilibrium, bad moods, fear of life, and nervous disorders such as tension headaches, stomach and circulation trouble. Raised physical-mental tension is not only antagonized by an unhealthy lifestyle (e.g. through alcohol & nicotine abuse) but can also lead to sleep disorders and an increased susceptibility to disease.

Doctors and psychologists have thus been recommending relaxation methods for years. They have especially recommended methods which aim to reduce internal tension and increase well-being after a longer stint of physical or mental activity. Programs focussing on such methods require a lot of patience and determination and are often seen as too much work or too difficult and are abandoned sooner or later.

For this reason we researched ways of becoming more relaxed but with less effort. In the early stages we used soothing background music and later on we also animated the rather dry suggestions with imaginary images such as beaches, fields or glades. Such soothing elements were already being used in relaxation therapy but as we added more modern suggestion techniques and hypnosis to our method, a new method with supplemental features was borne.
Within this method, many suggestions were played simultaneously via headphones. Music became increasingly important and soon stopped being purely background music as in certain situations it created a harmonious unity with words. Our deep relaxation theory thus became more developed. This method is characterized by it various voice and sound models which ease us into a relaxed state and ward off negative thoughts. Furthermore, it unleashes a hidden power into different spheres and thus frees up our own hidden possibilities.

Composition and effectiveness of deep relaxation

The extraordinary intensity of this method is based upon a harmonious combination of numerous elements which support suggestion and relaxation and act simultaneously. The recording of music and voice is managed by an experienced audio engineer using ultra modern recording techniques. Furthermore, we use a stereo dummy head microphone for recording voice which enables us to emulate the sound-transmitting characteristics of a real human head and increase the selectivity of the partly spoken and whispered voices. The need for high quality recording was reiterated time and time again in our pre-observation tests. It was proven with a high number of test persons that the effectiveness of deep relaxation depends primarily on its sound quality.

The music
A very important element which supports relaxation and thus is a key component of deep relaxation is the music. This is normally a 30-minute composition and a harmonious unit consisting of the appropriate suggestion, imaginary images and sounds from nature.

Both the euphonious melody and the harmonious composition with its balanced spectrum of sounds have a pleasing and relaxing effect. The rhythms of these complex relaxation melodies have been chosen on account of their therapeutic value. The continuous beat of 60 beats per minute offers additional relaxation.

Due to its unique characteristics, the musical aspect of deep relaxation already possesses an amazing power of suggestion. Studies have shown that breathing, pulse and numerous other bodily functions unconsciously follow the indirect sound suggestion and level off at the individual relaxation level of the listener.

Sounds from nature are a further element of deep relaxation. The listener’s imagination is stimulated without him or her being taken into an internal imaginary world. Furthermore, associations are created in the subconscious which are normally connected with pleasurable feelings and moods.

The suggestions

The unique effect of our new suggestion method arises from the use of indirect and pictorial stimuli. Compared with “classic” relaxation and hypnosis methods which primarily aim to influence the client with direct and often more formal stereotypical instructions, positive affirmations and encouragement (“You are now hearing my voice”), deep relaxation enables the listener to adopt the suggestion within their own personal boundaries (“You are now free to distance yourself and relax more and more”). Right from the beginning it secures the necessary space for the ego to develop and thus reduces the appearance of resistance which can hinder success or even totally destroy it.
A further facet of this method is the focus on the listener’s personal areas of conflict. These are not brushed aside or “covered” by placating words but primarily addressed as part of our hypnotherapeutic treatment. Generally accepted generic comments such as “Learning means changing” or suggestions in the interrogative such as “Are you aware of all the possibilities which are hidden within you?” have proven to be particularly effective in activating the so called internal searching processes which can lead to real problem-solving. The acclaimed American doctor and psychotherapist Milton Erickson has repeatedly demonstrated in his research over a 40-year time period that mental disorders can be eliminated using suggestions which are indirect and interspersed casually.

The intense effect of deep relaxation is due to a totally new suggestion technique. The simultaneous use of different spoken and whispered suggestions which are formulated according to a complex “construction plan” prevent an overload of information. Within the same time frame, far more messages are transmitted than would be possible using oral structures within ordinary methods.

The main voice runs through the program. In the deep relaxation phase it conveys, with the other voices, positive affirmations focussed on the particular suggestion topic.
Whispered voices that seem to go through your head in the truest sense of the word are based on the dummy head microphone technique. The voices act as a suggestion intensifier as they are interwoven. In addition to the main voice and the whispered suggestions that are placed to the right, to the left or in the middle of the stereo panorama, a further voice appears somewhere at the back of the head. Studies have shown that the voice in the back of the head is experienced more intensively if the suggestion used at this stage begins with the pronoun ”I”. The original external suggestion is transformed into a segment of the listener’s own personality, similar to the development in a child, and the parents’ words gradually become those of the conscience.

Although in the deep relaxation phase four to five voices are audible, no information is lost - the spoken words are internalised subconsciously and you discover new principles, stimulation and encouragement each time you listen.

The design of the programme

The thirty-minute programme is divided into six parts which flow into each other:
  1. Introduction to relaxation
  2. Imaginary walk – often through nature
  3. Relaxation deepening
  4. Deep suggestion phase
  5. Return from inner imagination
  6. Orientation to the present
To use our method no physical exercise (e.g. stretching, loosening up of certain muscles or breathing tasks) is required. Our method focuses on activities which aim to relax the body and mind on a mental level only. Therefore within deep suggestion the most important psychological cognition pattern is considered to be the focus on images and metaphors by the brain.  Thus the landscapes used in our method (beaches, seas, forests, meadows) are fantasies which not only support relaxation but are also symbols of space, freedom and safety.
According to our experience the level of relaxation reaches its deepest point after about 15 minutes. Deeply relaxed on soft grass surrounded by the sounds of nature and a complex network of sounds which communicate gentle feelings of delight and joy – this condition is a very good basis for the subsequent deep relaxation phase because at this stage the subconscious is particularly receptive for positive susurration.

Positive affirmations such as “It’s amazing how many unconscious possibilities you have” are not kept on the surface where they would be undervalued but enter deep levels of our personality. At the subconscious level they become more powerful by transcending the relaxation phase and not only increasing the feeling of inner silence, relaxation and confidence but also influencing behaviour (e.g. smoking, nutrition) and the listener’s psychosomatic reactions (e.g. pain) in a sustainable way.
